Ben Chapman, PhD, is the Department Head of Agricultural & Human Sciences at North Carolina State University. Working with a team, including Polly and Guelph University, they have combined wastewater data from the municipality of Guelph and online conversation data about symptoms from Polly to predict the spread of illnesses like COVID-19 and other food-borne illnesses. Their results are revolutionary in the public health space, making it possible to take steps to control the spread of diseases before health systems become overwhelmed.
